Chapter One
Bulldozer

“I’ve learned so much about The Consumer! I have a theory they’re from the Dimensional Hole…” A girl screeched to the left of Bulldozer. He closed his eyes, gripping onto the jacket slung over his shoulders, trying not to pay attention to the child. Thankfully, the red jacket covered up his arms. He didn’t want monsters to see the truth of him; the “damaged goods.” The girl was about thirteen or fourteen, dark hair tied into low, curly pigtails. In one hand she held a bright green balloon, the other a notebook.
The girl was talking to a woman much older than her. Long, brunette hair flowed down in waves, and a crown made out of pure gold and rubies rested on her head. Her dress was like a pool of yellow silk, conforming to the shape of her body. Bulldozer recognized this woman as a Tiana.
“It is horrible, is it not, Nicki?” Tiana sighed, looking down at her nimble hands. “I suppose we should just be lucky we live on an island… Who would do such a thing?”
“Why do we automatically assume The Consumer is an evil monster?” Nicki piped up all of a sudden. “Maybe they have to eat monsters to survive. Like Vampires. We don’t just shame Vampires for eating monsters, why is this different?”
Bulldozer couldn’t help but agree with Nicki. He didn’t mean to hurt his Summoner or kill her. Did that mean he was evil, too? As Tiana spoke, he was briefly reminded of another one who was like him. That woman’s name was Alicia. She was one of the newest monsters. The poor thing had no idea of what the Summoner wanted to do to everyone.
…But he’d rather not remember those days. Granted, it was already two months ago that he escaped, but it still hurt to remember. The Summoner was a twisted young mind; he would admit that she was a genius, especially for her age. But at the same time, she lacked the empathy and love that most Summoners had. Alicia’s screams as the Summoner hacked off one arm, replacing it with a metallic arm she built herself still echoed in Bulldozer’s head.
“Interesting. Very interesting.” Summoner’s mouth curled into a smile. No one knew her name, so all the monsters simply referred to her as “Summoner”
Alicia screamed and wailed out as Summoner moved the saw up and down on her shoulder. She could feel her bones cracking, the blood flowing down to the ground of the Arena Defense Tower. Tears ran down Alicia’s beautiful face as she pleaded for Summoner to stop; it hurt so much.
“Shh, I know it hurts, Alicia, but it will be over soon.” Even with Alicia strapped down on a chair and Summoner standing on a stepladder, she still had to get on her tiptoes to whisper into Alicia’s ear. How a child who wasn’t even ten could be so uncaring, Bulldozer wondered as he heard the screams. “Besides, with your new arm, your power and agility will be increased by 50%. I could learn so much from dissecting you…!”
With a hasty tug, Alicia’s arm was ripped out, and she screamed louder. Summoner didn’t even flinch as blood splattered her white lab coat, instead scribbling something down using her free hand. She smiled gently at Alicia again. “Now then, let’s get that metal arm installed on you, hey?”
He had been genuinely afraid that if he stayed she might have killed him. He wasn’t too sure about her state, now that he escaped; whether she was comatose or…actually dead. The thought of being a monster who killed his Summoner sent shivers down his spine. He just remembered trying to get off the island, and Summoner caught up with him, stepping in front of the Frankenstein with a maniacal smile on her face.
“Why do you want to leave, Bulldozer?” She had cooed in her high-pitched, childish voice. “I could learn so much about Frankenstein anatomy if you stay! Aren’t you grateful for your new arms, too? With them, you’ve never lost a Guild War!”
Summoner had advanced closer and closer to him, and he could see that in one hand she held the saw used to cut off the limbs of monsters. Out of fear, he did something that no monster should ever do. He had attacked his Summoner. Bulldozer had never meant to hurt her; but he wasn’t used to his new strength thanks to the metal arms Summoner had implanted in him but a week or two before his escape. Summoner screamed, but it was sharply cut off as she fell like a ragdoll to the ground.
And then she was perfectly still.
Bulldozer was afraid he had broken something in her, or worse. The grass was becoming tainted; going from the emerald-like color it always was to dark red. He realized blood was coming out of some wound in her, and Bulldozer snapped out his shock, turning to the Energy Gateway and he started walking, passing by monsters on the island, all of whom had been modified in a way. The only one whom Bulldozer wasn’t sure had been experimented with was Galleon, and even then the shining blue and metal eye-patch over his left eye made him wonder.
A tiny hand grabbed onto his jacket as he was about to leave the island. He turned to the source, and saw a little girl with white hair tied up into two pigtails. His heart dropped as he recognized it was Neal. She had one eye gouged out by Summoner and had it covered up by something similar to Galleon’s eye-patch.
“Are you finally getting off the island…?” Neal whispered to him.
“Yeah. Come with me. You’re too young for…” Bulldozer motioned to the island.
Neal knew what he was implicating and gave him a gentle smile. “Don’t worry about me. You were the one planning your escape for months. Besides, the other monsters and I have to clean up the body.”
Bulldozer felt a pang in his chest. “…You don’t have to, you know.”
“Nonsense. It never happened.” Neal’s smile widened a bit. Even with the metal eye, Bulldozer had to admit she was adorable. “Now shoo. Go before anyone finds out what happened here.”
Bulldozer did as he was told, faltering to look back at him only once. Neal was waving with one hand, watching him leave. The blue portal engulfed him in light, and that was the last he had ever seen of her. He snapped out of his remembrance as a figure seemed to float towards him. The figure was female; blonde hair cut to her shoulders in soft curls.
What was strange about the figure was the glow around her and the fact she was…blurry? No, opaque was the word Bulldozer was looking for. He could see through her; he could see both her and the long waiting list of the Arena as monsters and Summoners crowded around it, trying to see who got who as an opponent. The figure stopped when she was perhaps a few inches away from Bulldozer.
“Excuse me.” She whispered. Her voice was like a breeze. That caught Bulldozer off-guard.
“What is it?” He gruffly replied, a total opposite to the figure’s voice. He didn’t mean to sound cold, though; that was just a force of habit.
“Do you perhaps know where I could find a Bounty Hunter?” It wasn’t uncommon for monsters to have someone whom they hated with all their heart and wanted to see them dead. Bulldozer admitted that no, he didn’t; sorry.
“It’s okay. Thank you anyway.” She turned away, starting to float to Nicki and Tiana, but stopped and turned back to Bulldozer. “I’m Pandora, by the way.”
“Bulldozer.”

It hurts, it hurts, oh please God make it stop, it hurts, don’t make me succumb to this repulsive urge again please please please –
Olivia didn’t realize she was hyperventilating until it was too late. She sucked in a breath, choking on a noodle. Olivia coughed violently, gulping down her bottle of water as tears blurred the steaming bowl of noodles in front of her. The need to consume flesh was growing stronger again; she had hoped desperately to eat enough regular food until the screaming in the back of her head could scream no more for the moment.
“Make it stop, please…” Olivia sobbed to no one in particular. Each bite of normal food made the burning in the back of her throat go stronger, and eventually she hauled herself to the trash can and threw up.
She couldn’t do this. Just one monster. One. That’s all it would take. She would even take a silver-star monster if it came down to it.
Olivia stood up, taking another drink from her bottle. She had recently traveled all the way back to Garen Forest, and was staying in one of the towns there. Ever since the dark energy caused from the hatred of Lady Arang and the group of Dark Summoners cleared up, the whole continent seemed friendlier. More towns had been set up (except near the Faimon Volcano, of course), and the towns that were already there grew more populated and better than they had been. The town she was in was one of the newer towns.
It was fairly popular; nomads like her and tourists frequently came and left the town, so there was always someone wandering around whom no one would know were gone until a month or so after she had consumed them. Olivia sighed, standing up and finishing off her water bottle, tossing the plastic into the trash can.
She glanced at the noodles, which were rapidly cooling off. Oh well. She would finish them later, after she got the meal she had really been craving. She headed out of her hotel room silently, giving a brief wave to the hotelkeeper, Katarina. The Valkyrie made some remark about another day, another adventure, but Olivia didn’t care. She needed to eat.
The sound of monsters in the town filled Olivia’s ears. She couldn’t pick one of the residents to eat; that would draw too much suspicion. The dying light of the sunset meant that Olivia could eat someone and bury them and everyone would be none the wiser until the corpse began to rot. Olivia picked someone at random, her eyes resting on a red and yellow Frankenstein.
Hm. His flesh would be tough, but it is still flesh nevertheless.
Consume him.
Consume.
“Forgive me.” Olivia sobbed as she waited for the Frankenstein to pass by her. The streets were empty now, and it was night. She dashed forward, pulling him into the darkness with her. Tears ran down her face as she sank her teeth down into his arm, tearing out a piece of his jacket as she did so. Bulldozer was frozen in shock; everything feeling like it was happening in an instant.
…
…Olivia screamed in pain as her teeth collided with something metal. Now it was Olivia’s turn to freeze up for a mere second, and then instincts took over for Bulldozer. He threw her off of him, slamming her against the wall and using one hand to pin her there. His other arm reeled back, as if to punch her, but Olivia didn’t struggle, her head instead swimming. Black dots filled her vision; energy going out as she had used her last burst to try and consume Bulldozer.
Olivia felt like she was underwater, floating aimlessly in muffled waters. She realized she was going to black out at the worst possible time, but she didn’t seem to care soon after, as there was darkness, and then there was no more sound.]]>

Prologue
Olivia

…must…consume…
The hunger struck Olivia again in powerful waves. It was so painful she nearly fell over as her stomach growled. Her breathing became sharp and hushed; each breath so difficult. She needed to eat. She had to eat. She thought she would die from this painful hunger if she didn’t.
With great effort, Olivia finally stood up; the hand that did not hold her katana was pressed up against the soft flesh of her lower abdomen. The rumbling in her stomach did not fade, instead growing worse with each passing second. Oh, why did she have to have this insatiable craving…? Life would be so much easier if she were normal, like all the other monsters on her island.
…hun…gry…
Without a word she advanced forward in the island, looking around. Ah, there was Megan. She was asleep, leaning against a tree. Olivia didn’t want to feed this wicked part of her, but she had to. She couldn’t starve it out; doing so would meant that her fragile body would starve too, and she would keel over and close her eyes for the final time, never to be seen again.
For as long as she could remember, Olivia had always been like this. She knew that it was a horrible thing to do, but she had to. Her body needed it; otherwise she wouldn’t have been here for this long. She tried to lay low about her problems, only feed into it when necessary…but it was the “when necessary” part that terrified her about herself.
It had been a month, maybe two, since she had last satisfied this urge inside of her. A Neostone Agent is meant to be graceful, but show no mercy. Olivia did not show mercy to herself; she would starve herself of the meat she so desperately needed until the very last second, and when she felt as if she were about to faint was when she gorged herself. No matter how much of regular monster food she ate, it wasn’t nearly enough.
She had to do this.
…need…flesh…
Megan woke up with a gurgling scream. Olivia pushed her free hand onto Megan’s mouth, both silencing her screams and tilting her head up to expose her neck some more. Olivia sank her teeth into the warm flesh again, tearing out a good sized chunk. Blood splattered all over her clothes, but she couldn’t seem to care at the moment. To Olivia, Megan’s blood and flesh was a mix of delightfully sweet and sour at the same time.
Megan tried to scream in pain again, but the combination of her fatal wounds and Olivia keeping her quiet made her cries for help futile. Olivia ripped another succulent piece of flesh out, this time from Megan’s arm. The flavor of her blood rolled around on Olivia’s tongue as she swallowed the liquid and her meat, intending to take as much off of Megan’s bones as she could.
A shrill scream, however, snapped Olivia out of her feeding. The blonde woman looked up, to see the Summoner rapidly backing away from her and the corpse of Megan. His eyes were wide, and the look in them showed primal fear. Fear for his life, because of Olivia. Instead of shame, which would be what you would expect from her, Olivia just felt…indifference. This was far too normal to her,, all because of her disgusting requirement for the flesh of monsters.
“Get away from me, you freak!” He yelped. Olivia had grown used to the torment and the fear, but it still stung to hear the human who once trusted her now calling her a freak. She deserved it, though. She was a freak.
This is why you have no friends, Olivia. She internally sighed to herself. Olivia usually ate all her friends or drove them away. She expected nothing less.
The process took less than an hour. By the end of an hour, Olivia no longer belonged to her Summoner, nothing more than a nomad now. Two of his monsters, Veromos and Mo Long, escorted her off the island – that is to say, they both grabbed her by the arms and pulled her towards the Energy Gateway. Olivia didn’t try to struggle, staying perfectly still. By now she knew better than to make a fuss. It would just be a futile attempt to delay the inevitable.
They punched some random coordinates into the Gateway. The blue light filling the circle up began to glow brighter, indicating it was ready for use, and Olivia was thrown in. They didn’t care where she ended up; just as long as she was gone from the Summoner’s island. Olivia closed her eyes and braced herself for anything. If she were really unlucky she’d end up in Faimon Volcano.
She flew out of the portal, where she skidded on the ground, colliding with the hot sand of the deserts. Olivia knew from instincts that this was Tamor Desert. Surprisingly, she was relieved to be in Tamor Desert. She knew that there were towns scattered across the area. There she could temporarily find sanctuary and perhaps an extra meal or two to curb her hunger for at least a little while. She stood up, brushing the sand off of her clothes, and started walking; katana in hand. This was going to be…interesting, to say the least.

The Consumer was fairly well known now – perhaps to the point of even becoming a terrifying legend. For two years now, monsters in various towns all over Mystica were found, torn to pieces; obviously by one of the more human monsters. The places where the chunks of flesh were taken were obviously done by human teeth. There was no chance of a Werewolf or Vampire being The Consumer.
Olivia felt flattered the world was making an urban legend about her.
Much to Olivia’s surprise, she had yet to be summoned after her latest incident. Olivia briefly wondered if she had been eternally marked as a monster whom no one wanted. Some monsters were like that; they were so useless or horrible in the eyes of the gods, the Summoners, that no one wanted them. Monsters like Vanessa were one of those kinds. Poor Vanessa tried her best to be loved by someone, anyone, but in the end she lived as a hotel keeper in some town in Garen Forest.
Nowadays Olivia just traveled around Mystica, going from place to place and living in peace for about two months, maybe three if she could starve herself for long enough. Once again, she only ate the sweet, yet bitter flesh of the monsters when she absolutely had to. While the small town nearby the Cairos Dungeon screamed and gaped at the crack of dawn over the decaying, week-old body of a Veromos who had been eaten by The Consumer, Olivia stalked away without a sound.
Two years. Two years without a Summoner. Olivia felt painfully lonely. She’d like to have a friend, one to travel with her and wouldn’t judge her…one who maybe, just maybe, would be exempt from her urge to devour all life. That would be nice. Olivia looked up at the stars without faltering her pace; the tiny pinpricks slowly fading away at the sun arose as it always did in its endless cycle. Tears pricked at her eyes, and under her breath, she wished that she wouldn’t be so alone.
…
…The Consumer has gone on for far too long. They must fall as I did.
Pandora hated The Consumer. She didn’t even know his or her identity. Pandora didn’t even know if The Consumer was even a monster. She hated them. She knew very well of their existence, though. Pandora had seen one of the corpses, long ago. This one had been eaten straight to the bone, and even then the bones of poor Maruna’s arms had been snapped open to suck the marrow out of them.
She had tried to tell someone about her discovery, but no one knew she was there; she felt like nothing but a soft breeze as she screamed endlessly about The Consumer striking again. The monsters in the town found out soon enough, anyway, but they could have found the girl sooner and given her a proper burial, instead of the shallow grave The Consumer had dug for the young woman.
Pandora mused to herself that ever since she became a spirit she had become a lot more hateful. She didn’t seem to care, though. She had someone to target her anger out; someone who deserved the anger and the hatred. For the first time in a decade, Pandora felt almost corporeal.
She looked at herself in the shimmering lake water in Aiden Forest. Even in the pale moonlight, she could see herself; just barely. It was better than what she had been before. She wasn’t able to see her reflection before. Pandora wondered why her hatred grounded her in reality. Her hair fell in white, soft waves; covered mostly by a black hat. Pandora’s face was young, twisted with hatred.
Her tattered navy blue robes flicked in the wind as she turned away and began to drift aimlessly. It would be a bit difficult not to be noticed by The Consumer now that she just barely had an image, but it would have to do.]]>

Chapter Five
Opponent Gready

“There’s a message from the Council of Summoners.” Ellia said, coming out of the Arena Defense Tower. “Who could it be?” A hologram of Lycana showed up, just like the messages from Durand about a week ago.
“Hello, this is Lycana.” She began. “I wanted to thank you again for last time. I’m still looking into the case, but…it’s hard to find evidence of who did it.”
“I was wondering if you could fulfill a request from the Council of Summoners.”
“Yeah, anything, Lycana.” Sara nodded. “What is it?”
“Recently, there were ancient ruins that were discovered on Mt. Siz, and now there have been reports of the appearances of Golems.”
“It’s not surprising that the monsters are stirred by the power of those ruins, but Golems?” Chasun was confused.
“The Council usually looks into these matters, but they’re currently busy with some problem in the Arena.” She didn’t want to tell them that the appearances of the Golems, and the problem that the Council of Summoners was busy with, were because of the dark energy that was radiating from Faimon Volcano – the dark energy that looked exactly like the dark Homunculus sister.
“All week, you have been busy, busy, busy; with the stupid Arena.” Yeonhong glared up at her. “I ask again; what’s so important about the Arena that you can’t do it yourselves?”
“Perhaps it’s the work of Lady Arang again…” Lucien sighed. She had asked if she could become a permanent resident of the island, seeing how nice it seemed. Sara, of course, enthusiastically agreed.
“Perhaps it is. I’m worried that it’s too urgent of a matter to be ignored, but we have to send someone.” Lycana was glad to change the subject from Yeonhong. “I can promise you that you will be rewarded handsomely for your troubles.”
“Durand and your father have praised you as a great Summoner, despite your age, and I’ve seen your abilities with my own eyes.” Sara beamed at the compliment. She definitely wasn’t the kind of person to fish for compliments, but she would never decline one if given to her.
“I know this may sound difficult, but please consider our favor. Let’s keep in touch, alright? Thank you.” With that, the message ended and Lycana disappeared. Ellia turned to Sara.
“Lycana’s in charge of ruins and ancient relics in the Council of Summoners.” She explained, having just found that out herself about a day ago. “I think it sounds like a promising opportunity!”
“But Golems?” Sara tilted her head. “Even though they’re common in the summoning pool, they’re actually hard to find in the wild in the entire continent of Mystica.”
“I hope this doesn’t try to get us killed again.” Elucia sighed. She was still sore from last week’s battle against Guardian Icaru.
“Hang on, there’s another message, this time from Durand. Did he hear about the Garen Forest incident?” Ellia projected the message in front of them. Lucien admired him slightly, having fallen head over heels when Sara explained to her who he was.
“Dear friend, I heard you had a match with Guardian Icaru.” He smirked. “Finally, a real match for you, am I right? Hope it wasn’t too dangerous!”
“It actually was very dangerous!” Sara nodded. “Everyone but my newest monster, Su, was knocked out, before her partner Lucien came to save the day!”
“I was shocked, too, you know!” Ellia huffed. “They told me that it would just be a few upset monsters to take care of! I didn’t know that we were going to meet a monster-human hybrid spirit that hated both –”
“ANYway,” He cut the rambling girl off, “the Council thinks that it was just a simple heist, but I heard the whole forest was in a frenzy.”
“It certainly was what you would call a ‘frenzy,’ Durand.” Su sighed.
“Lycana’s been looking into the situation, but we don’t have any answers just yet. Putting that aside, though, let’s get to work.” Durand grinned at Sara, getting ready to tell her something he was sure would dazzle her.
“The Arena Portal on your island will be opening about….now.” Suddenly the whole island’s eyes turned towards the left. A swirling blue mist was in the air, changing and forming until, once it cleared away, a mini replica of the Sky Arena was open. There were steps that led to the Arena, where it would take people to the real thing.
“Fascinating, is it not?” He said, gauging their reactions. Elucia, Lucien and Sara were in awe, Roid a bit curious, and everyone else generally didn’t care.
“Welcome to the Arena, my friend!” Sara turned and starting thanking Durand. He had to tell her to stop (while laughing, of course) before he could continue on.
“Now, this is where you come in. It’s time to choose your match.” He paused for a moment, before continuing. “…Actually, I’ve already chosen your first opponent for you.” Everyone’s attention was brought back to Durand.
“No one knows his real name, but they call him Gready. He used to steal and rob the people whose family members were away during the Summoner’s War.” He gave an explanation as to how he was caught and arrested, and when he was released from prison he was the first to start summoning monsters strictly for battle.
“He might be just a tad much for your first match, but I’m sure you can handle him!” He laughed a bit. “Now, what’re you waiting for? I’ll be looking forward to seeing you victorious!” The message disappeared, leaving Ellia upset.
“I knew that he could be random, but WOW. Gready?!” She huffed once more. “He really can be unpredictable…” Sara wasn’t listening. She had already climbed up onto the mini replica of the Arena Portal, her monsters with her, and suddenly, she was there at the real thing. The gateway was opening, and a list of people waiting for a fight was on the right.
“Hey, wait for me!” She shouted, doing the same thing. Sara was reading the list, looking for Gready’s name.
“Ah, here he is!” Sara smiled. Other people were surrounding the place with their monsters, looking for challengers. She was able to make out a Laika with a scar down his eye, an Illiana polishing her sword, along with a beautiful girl with her hair tied up into what looked like an ice cream swirl – she could never remember if she was Tiana or Elenoa, as they looked way too similar for her. Oh well, that didn’t matter. It was time to fight.
Her team consisted of Elucia, Roid, Su and Lucien. Only Elucia had any runes in her, but that didn’t matter, as Gready’s Arena defense, which he gloated about, wasn’t that intimidating. None of his monsters were awakened, and one of them was a Slime, a silver-star monster that couldn’t be awakened.
“Who dares to challenge me? A little girl like you? Hahah!” He laughed. What a strange sight he was – a red turban on his head and a golden robe covering his pot belly. There was a vicious grin on his face, showing off a golden tooth.
His monsters went first. A wind Harpu, Seal, let out a piercing shriek that stunned Elucia so much she couldn’t attack. The fire Elemental he had fired at Lucien, his own Elucia covering Sieq in an ice mist that thankfully didn’t freeze him, and finally his Slime also hitting Sieq. He was struggling to stay on his feet, but there was a gleam in the hound’s eye that showed that he wouldn’t be taken down that easily.
The Hellhound snapped at his Seal first. Lucien fired at the Harpu’s ankle, knocking her right out. Su went for the kill, whipping at the Elemental and taking him out. Two monsters down, Sara thought to herself, two more to go. The battle wasn’t nearly as hard as she expected – in fact, it was quite easy.
Elucia snapped out of it as Sieq snarled and bit down on the Slime. Surprisingly, it flowed right out of its jaws and merged back into what looked like a teardrop. Su swung at it thrice, reducing it down to almost nothing. The poison her whip was fused with made it dissolve into a puddle, unable to form into anything anymore for that battle.
All that was left was his Elucia, which was soon knocked out by one of Lucien’s steady shots. Even for her first opponent in the Sky Arena, it was incredibly easy – almost too easy, Chasun thought. That didn’t matter, though, as she was busy taunting Gready.
“Oh my Artamiel’s Sword, did you really just get taken out by someone who’s probably about a tenth of your age?” She shouted. “Ey-ooo! Guess we know you’re not getting the Legend Rank anytime soon if you can get whipped by a six-year old girl!”
“The Arena Battle versus Gready and Sara has ended! The victorious is Sara!” The speakers announced. The man who stood in front of his wiped out team no longer had a smirk on his face, and instead was replaced by a grimace.
“…This isn’t over!” He snarled, shoving his monsters back up on their feet and stomping out of the Arena.
“Great job!” Ellia congratulated. “I knew right from the start you’d win; you’re just that good.”
“By the name of Elsharion, Gready got whipped by a girl who hasn’t even gone through puberty yet!” Chasun was too busy taunting the already fuming Gready. Yeonhong had decided to stay at the island, which left her free to shout whatever she pleased.
“Okay, Chasun, that’s enough.” Su stopped her. “I don’t think you want him to die from how brutal your burns are.”
“Hey, look at that!” Ellia realized. “It’s a message from Durand. Was he really watching this whole time…?” The message blinked on, standing in front of them all.
“That was a sweet victory! Looks like I should have picked you a tougher opponent!” He smiled.
“Damn right!” Chasun crossed her arms, proud of Sara. “Gready got whipped by a girl! Gready got whipped by a girl!”
“You should be careful, though. Don’t go challenging anyone and everyone; powerful Summoners would love to take you down.” He warned. “Trust me; just ten minutes ago I watched someone with all light and dark natural five-stars force a new Summoner into an Arena battle. Thankfully, soon enough you’ll be so good you’re gonna take them down!” Chasun was still busy shouting “Gready got whipped by a girl!” over and over again.
“More important matches will be added to the Arena Rivals list for you.” Durand said. “The Arena’s “winner takes all” rule is simple and primitive. You can consider it a mini-magic war.” He sighed and shook his head.
“But, for twenty years, this has kept the peace…You do remember we all want checks and balances, right?”
“Yep! We don’t want to start another Summoner’s War again, that’s for sure!” Sara nodded.
“But, really, you know what your parents and I would want?” He asked. She shook her head. “For you to win and take it all!” He crossed his arms at the incredulous look on her face.
“No, seriously – I think that’s the best option. Show the Arena who rules!” He suddenly remembered something.
“Also, check your island. I’ve sent you a gift to help you fight!” Durand explained that it was the light Garuda, Teon. The monster could heal and revive all her other monsters, which would be great for if she was in a pinch and needed one of her important attackers back up.
“I’ll be waiting for the good news, like always!” The message disappeared.
“Harrumph!” Ellia huffed. “It’s all politics nowadays!”
“The only rule of life is to never talk politics with someone.” Chasun butted in. “Trust me, no one wins when they’re shouting insults at one another because their political views are different from each other’s.”
“I do think that there is one good thing about the Arena, though.” Ellia said.
“Yeah? What’s that?” Sara asked.
“You can easily punish the bad Summoners! Gready already had a bad reputation for being a no-good scumbag!” She smiled. “And now look! You’ve showed him who’s boss! It felt amazing to see him lose so easily!” Ellia perked up. She had such a lovely smile, Sara thought. It’s just like my mother’s.
“I’ll be looking forward to more Arena matches! For now, though, we have some ruins in Mt. Siz to investigate!”]]>

Chapter Four
Lady of the Whip

“Impressive for your first Mystical Scroll!” Chasun clapped. “It would be even more impressive if she was her fire sister, but –” Her musings were cut off by Ellia coming outside to see what the commotion was all about and by the snapping of Su’s whip. There was anger and fear inside of the Rakshasa.
“Who are you?!” She snarled. “What did Lady Arang do to me?!” Elucia squeaked at the woman’s harsh tone.
“Whoa whoa whoa whoa, we don’t know anything about this Lady Arang!” Ellia shouted, breaking into a run. There have been times that monsters had memories of their past before they were summoned, and they were usually the ones who were unsummoned – that is to say that their Summoners decided to set them free for whatever reason.
As Su calmed down, Sara carefully approached her. “Apologies.” She said, without showing any emotion. “My name is Su, and I am here to avenge my sisters, taken by Lady Arang.”
“Well, you aren’t going to find any Nine-Tailed Foxes here.” Yeonhong huffed. She had walked over to see what the commotion is about. “This girl literally just started today.” Su turned towards her and smiled.
“A light Sky Dancer…” She sighed. “I knew one once. She, like Ran and Hwa, were taken by Lady Arang.”
“Don’t think I’m any other Sky Dancer. I’m ME, no one else.” The girl turned away from Su. This reaction was normal for those who knew her, of course, but to Su she came off as unfriendly. She shrugged this off, though, as Sara’s eyes lit up.
“Whoa! My first four-star is an awesome one!” Sara realized. Su had training on how to use her whip, and all her life she had been preparing for anything that required her to fight. She knew how to poison the enemy; to slow them down and to take some of their life force to keep herself alive. She would have been a wonderful protector for any Summoner, especially a girl as small as Sara.
“I simply trained for any encounter with enemies.” Su tried to shrug it off like Yeonhong’s harsh words, but Sara wouldn’t budge and instead helped her off the Summoning Circle.
“I’m Sara, by the way! That’s Ellia, that’s Elucia, Roid and Sieq! Those two are Chasun and Yeonhong! They’re sisters!” The girl rambled on, and for a second Su was reminded of her younger sister, Hwa. She was the middle child, Ran being over ten years her senior and Hwa a month younger than Su.
“I have many questions for you, Sara, but for now, our priority is on Su and this Lady Arang.” Ellia was, indeed, curious as to where she had gotten the Mystical Scroll.
“If you have been to Garen Forest today, you would have noticed the dark energy radiating off of the trees and the grass.” Su started. Sieq sniffed her heels, taking in her scent, before backing away, realizing she was a water monster. The Rakshasa did not notice, though.
“Lady Arang has been there, tainting the monsters, and the guardian of the forest, Icaru.” She shook her head. “My partner and I have been fighting off as many monsters as we could, but we can’t seem to find our way out of the forest and to the guardian to warn him…”
“Partner?” Chasun asked.
“An Elven Ranger; named Lucien. She apparently took pity on me and decided to fight off as many monsters as we could and stop Lady Arang before the damage is spread.” Su changed the subject, to Lady Arang herself.
“Lady Arang is not who you think she might be from her name alone – she’s almost what you would consider human, but she has the traits of a Nine-Tailed Fox and her hair is a pure white. That can’t be normal in humans.” Chasun realized who she was talking about at this point.
“Oh, I’ve heard of her.” She piped up. “Lady Arang is apparently this human-monster hybrid who died, filled with hatred for both humanity and monsterkind, and her spirit was filled with rage and eternal pain.” Chasun shook her head at this point, musing that the girl was just suffering.
“You are correct, Chasun.” Su affirmed. “Lady Arang will be finished corrupting Garen Forest by the twilight of next week’s dawn, and then she will move on to somewhere else.”
“We can’t let that happen, now can we?” Ellia asked. “We’ll get back there, first thing in the morning! You see, we were also brought to Garen Forest, to investigate the sudden hostility of monsters!”
“Really?” Su turned towards the blonde. “Thank you, all of you. I promise to forever protect you, Summoner Sara.” There was a warm, fuzzy feeling blooming inside of her. She had not felt such a thing since Ran and Hwa were taken from her by Lady Arang.
“Right then!” Chasun smiled. “We’ll be going back first thing in the morning!” There were still many questions that needed to be answered, but the whole island was just happy to have a new addition to the team.
“Shall we show you around, Madame Su?” Roid asked her. She shook her head.
“This place is small. I can see the other end of it just here. But, it’s cozy and peaceful, too.” I could get used to it, she was about to say, but bit her tongue at the last moment to keep herself silent.
—
Everyone awoke at dawn as a howl of pain rang out. Su was already up and out of the door, and on the balcony of the Arena Defense Tower, Sara could see her rushing towards the Energy Gateway, whip in hand. Elucia and Roid were watching curiously.
“I was wrong, Summoner Sara!” Su snarled. “She has already reached Guardian Icaru!” The words hit her like a bucket of cold water, shocking her to full wakefulness. She rushed down the spiral stairs and out the door, shouting for Ellia and her monsters to hurry up, Lady Arang was corrupting Icaru.
Garen Forest no longer had a beautiful sense of awe to it, but instead left a pit in Sara’s throat and a lump that wouldn’t go away. Her heart was throbbing painfully in her ribcage, even with her team surrounding her. Perhaps it was because the Garen Forest was suddenly devoid of monsters.
All that was needed was a ten-minute walk at that point, before they reached the heart of Garen Forest. Ellia was the first to notice the two men in black robes, rushing away. Where they must have once stood, a girl was standing, facing away from them. Her white hair was loose, free to go wherever it pleased as she walked, against her pink yukata, mostly hidden by a red umbrella. What really caught Sara’s eye, though, were the nine fox tails, twitching lazily. All of them were a light tan, the tips as white as her hair. She could also make out a fox ear poking out of her crop of hair.
“Rise, now, Icaru dear. We have visitors.” The girl giggled; her voice high-pitched and childlike.
“Lady Arang.” Su spat out. Lady Arang didn’t turn around fully; just a peek of her pale face and golden eyes that almost glowed could be seen from behind her umbrella. Something was off about her, Sara thought, but then again she had just learned the night before that she was talking to a dead girl who hated her without even knowing her.
“Hello, Sue.” Lady Arang smiled, drawing out the last syllable instead of cutting it short, like others did. “I see you’ve brought friends.”
“What did you do to Guardian Icaru?!” She snarled, whip ready.
“It does not matter, Sue. He will be the first to kill off the pathetic scum that is humanity, and you will be the first victims.” She giggled, just as the howl they heard that morning appeared.
At the top of a cliff, a gigantic blue wolf stood, snarling and baring its fangs. Its eyes glimmered a vicious red as it leaped off the jagged rock and landed in front of them, causing the ground to shake. Ellia yelled in shock and Chasun stood in a protective stance over Sara. She couldn’t fight; she was not runed to do so. Lady Arang had since disappeared, leaving them at the mercy of the wolf.
“A-A gigantic wolf?!” Ellia shouted.
“It’s Guardian Icaru!” Su shouted right back.
“Watch out!” Chasun realized it was coming in for an attack. With gigantic claws, it sliced at Sieq, leaving him vulnerable to other attacks.
“Elucia! Purify!” Sara ordered. The blonde knight went for a double attack, slicing and stabbing at Icaru at the same time. Icaru leapt at Sieq again, this time clawing at him twice. It was enough to take the Hellhound out and while Elucia fretted over Sieq, the Inugami struck again, this time directed towards Elucia. In a fit of rage, Su dashed forward at Icaru, snapping her wrist thrice.
The whip curled and twisted at her command, and suddenly Icaru had been poisoned, over three times stronger than the poison the Mushroom had given Roid earlier. Icaru howled in pain as the poison took effect, weakening him, but he gritted his fangs and held on, determined to win. Elucia attempted to freeze Icaru, but it was like shooting peas at an alligator. Rage burned in the wolf’s tiny mind, and his eyes glowed even brighter, the once neon red it was glowing now tinted with darkness.
Elucia and Roid were down in the blink of an eye, and all that was left was Su. She swung her whip at just the right spot, and suddenly the damage Icaru had done to her was gone. It was just her against the guardian of the forest, and for a second everyone thought that would be it, Icaru would slaughter Su and then get rid of them all.
“Ankle Shot!” A voice rang out, clear as day, as a bright white arrow flew at Icaru and landing at his literal Achilles heel. He howled in pain and thrashed his head back and forth, looking for the one who shot the arrow. A tall, slender creature came out, white hair tied up to keep it out of her eyes and a bow made out of light in one hand.
“Lucien!” Su exclaimed gleefully. The girl turned to look at her partner and smiled.
“Heya, Su. Where’d ya go last night?” She didn’t wait for an answer, and fired a steady shot at Icaru, right into his eye. The wolf was finished with this shot, and bounded back into the forest, whimpering from his injuries.
“Phew!” Ellia sighed, once it was all over. “I thought that was the end, but your monsters saved us both!”
“Why did Icaru wake up all of a sudden…?” She mused.
“He protects the Garen Forest.” Another voice cut in, interrupting the reunion between Su and this elven archer. “Guardian Icaru sleeps unless something is trying to destroy the forest.”
A woman came out of the shadows, purple hair tied up into a high ponytail, like Ellia. Her red eyes showed intelligence and was hidden behind a pair of glasses. She was dressed in what looked like official robes and carried a tome in one hand. Ellia didn’t recognize who this smart-looking woman was, and she had to know. Sara cut in before she could ask.
“Who are you? I don’t believe we’ve met before.” The brunette child tilted her head at her. She immediately introduced herself as Lycana.
“Everything has gone to chaos…” She sighed, looking around. “I was sent here by the Council of Summoners to find you two.”
“Then I suppose you can tell us what happened here?” Ellia asked.
“Guardian Icaru woke up because of that Lady Arang girl, obviously.” Yeonhong looked like she despised Lycana the most out of everyone she had met.
“Guardian Icaru is the protector of a Fermion and his Summoner Marina, who were buried at the deepest end of the Garen Forest, where you are now.” She started. Chasun had heard stories of the Fermion who had saved his Summoner in a car crash, dying in the process, and a year later Marina mysteriously slipped into a coma and died. It had become almost a legend now. “The temple that the two were buried in was destroyed, though, and we don’t know why.”
“My god…” Ellia shook her head. Yeonhong scolded her for her language. No one paid attention to her. “So the whole forest was trying to guard the sanctuary?”
“That’s right. With you two here, though, the whole place is furious, as they think you did it.” Lycana surveyed the damage. Broken trees were everywhere, shattered by the battle between Icaru and Sara’s team.
“We’ll need to get you out of here. Guardian Icaru will return soon.”
“Not that wolf again!” Chasun harrumphed. “We’re getting out of here now!” It was around this time that Sara’s team began to wake up – just in time, Sara would muse later.
“Lucien will be coming along.” Su chimed in. Her friend nodded in silence, glad that she could have somewhere to rest her injuries for the moment.
“Come on, then!” Sara grinned. “Let’s go home!”]]>

"WAKE UP. WAKE UP. WAKE UP. WAKE UP." Orion screamed in my ear, over and over again. A low growl came from the back of my throat as I was woken up, ready to punish whoever yanked me out of Castle Esme Resort. I saw Orion staring in my face and sighed, letting my eyes glance over to the clock. "5:30 A.M.", it said, in bright red. I sighed again and closed my eyes.
"Orion, we talked about this. It's not. Even. Daytime." I half-scolded half-slurred. It was hard to speak when you were barely awake.
"I don't CARE, it's go time!" Orion shrieked. Su woke up from the other side of the room. Angrily mumbling, she leaned over her bed, grabbed a shoe and chucked it at him. It hit him square in the head. When he turned around, she threw the other shoe at him, this time in the face.
"If you're going to be that loud, at least wake up the others so we can all get together into the kitchen for breakfast before noon." She huffed. I smiled. Su was like me in many ways.
"Ugh, fine, but YOU gotta help me wake up Lushen." Orion stuck his tongue out at the woman.
"If I do I will never hear the end of it, through pranks." Su crossed her arms.
"GUYS." I sharply scolded. They stopped and turned to me.
"No fighting when I'm trying to sleep." Before they opened their mouths, I continued.
"Orion has to wake up Lushen because I'm irked." I could practically hear Orion roll his eyes. No one wanted to wake up the one heavy sleeper who gets back at people through horrible pranks. The debate on who would have to that morning frequently resulted in fights.
After some bleary-eyed attempts to get everyone up before 6 A.M. (and thankfully succeeding), we all gathered around in the dining room – rather, everyone else except Lapis and I gathered around. The two of us were in the next-room kitchen, actually.
"Sara this is ridiculous." She scowled, pointing at the coffee machine. I was too tired for this.
"I get it, Lapis. You and the coffee machine are in love, you need coffee to survive the first few hours of the morning, but today, you're getting cocoa." I was hunched down, the fridge door propped open and leaning against my shoulder, as I frantically searched for blueberries. I already knew that, if I asked, everyone would want pancakes for breakfast, so I didn't bother.
“Yeah, it does seem like you’re just using coffee as a crutch.” Chasun mumbled, her voice muffled, due to her arms crossed and on the table, her head rested on the wood in the gap between her arms and her body, like naptime in kindergarten. A mug of tea was in front of her, the steam curling and dissolving into nothing in the air.
“Mmm.” Her younger sister, Yeonhong, hummed, not really paying attention to her surroundings. Her knees were tucked up under her chin and her heels rested on the edge of her chair. A spiral sketchbook rested on her legs, a pencil firmly held in her right hand as she shaded a certain spot in her drawing. She was a gifted artist, even at 14.
“You’re unusually quiet today, Yeon.” I noted as I finally found the blueberries I was looking for. I turned to look at her as I closed the refrigerator door and stood up.
“I bet she’s drawing ship art again.” Orion threw the basketball he was bouncing about into the hoop I had installed on the wall earlier that week. I sighed and started making my pancake batter.
“I’m not even surprised, anymore. I just wonder who the unlucky victims are this time.” I didn’t even have to look at the bowl as I mixed my flour and milk. Lapis finally gave up, realizing she couldn’t argue her way into making coffee, and got out the jar of cocoa powder.
“…not shipping…” Yeonhong managed to say through her concentration. I replied back that if she wasn’t she would say what she was drawing.
“I’ll find out!” Lushen piped up. Before anyone could tell him not to, he appeared behind Yeonhong for just a second before returning to his chair.
“I’m betting Tony and Colin.” Lapis shouted, watching her mug turn in the microwave over and over again.
“Nope! It’s Captain America and the Winter Soldier!” Yeonhong slammed her sketchbook down onto her spot on the table. I looked at my pancake batter with a disappointed and disgusted look.
“If he were real, Captain America would be insulted.” I told her as I laid the whisk into the sink. Yeonhong jumped up in rage.
“OH YEAH? WELL SPIDERMAN ATE THE NINJA TURTLES!” Chasun raised her hand in the air.
“Actually, it was the Power Rangers, Yeon. They took the Triforce and then Mario got mad and then the Power Rangers ate the Ninja Turtles and then used the leftover shells to be thrown at Mario, who then promptly summoned a five star Darth Vader who he awakened into Kylo Ren and then used it in a real-time arena battle. The Power Rangers won, though, because they banned the one monster Mario used, AKA Kylo Ren.” I leaned over to the doorframe that connected the kitchen to the dining room just to look at Chasun in horror.
“…Are you OK?” Chasun let her arm drop.
“It would be better if you directed that question to ol’ Friggy over there.” I looked over, and surely enough, Frigate was slumped on his chair, head tilted up towards the ceiling, a hand on his forehead.
“How ‘ya feeling, buddy?” I asked.
“…Hungover.” He managed to groan out.
“I can understand why. It’s never to a good idea to try and play the Xbox 360’s Alone in the Dark in one sitting while drinking to keep yourself awake. Hell, it’s a bad idea to play it in general and a bad idea to drink.” I shrugged, pulling out my pan and putting it onto the stovetop, turning up the heat.
“…don’t really care, got to drink.” Frigate said, barely loud enough to hear because that would ruin his head even more than it already hurt.
“Drinking’s bad for you, Frigate. Remember? I wrote a haiku about it and everything?” I was just watching Frigate as I made the pancakes. I didn’t even need to look at what I was doing, I was just that good.
“Ah yes, how could we forget such wonderful rhymes such as ‘A beer on your face, you drink it to numb the pain, but it makes you rot?’” He retorted back, his voice dripping with sarcasm. I sighed. I was pretty much the only one who could write a haiku; much less understand its rules. I decided it was worth it to talk about the rules again and started.
“Frigate, a haiku is a Japanese poem. It’s not meant to rhyme, but instead have the first line be five syllables, the second line seven, and then the third line another five syllables.” I don’t even know why I attempted to reason with him; when Frigate was hungover all he would do was butt heads with everyone. I went back to making pancakes, stopping once more when I heard the all-too-familiar cracking of a can.
“Frigate. You just got back from some serious drinking. You need to chill out with the beer for, like, forever.” I reprimanded.
“Sara, you can’t have a hangover if you don’t stop drinking.” Was his line of logic in between huge swigs of beer.
“And by that same token, you can’t have a hangover if you don’t drink.” Satisfied with my imaginary microphone-drop, I was done talking unless I needed to intervene. This allowed me to eavesdrop on Yeonhong as she composed herself and started actually being able to talk again.
“Orion? You got a basketball you don’t need?” Yeonhong asked. Orion stopped for a moment to turn his ball around to look at her.
“…No.”
“I just need it for a moment.”
“No. You can’t have it.”
“But I need it.”
“Life or death situation?”
“Yes.”
“No it’s not.”
“Just give it to me.”
“No!” Orion jerked away as Yeonhong stood up. It wasn’t nearly enough to stop her, though. I guess that’s what happens when you’re mad. I later learned that she jumped past him, grabbed the ball and threw it at Lushen’s face. It hit him on the forehead, bounced off and towards the wall, bounced off the wall, changed direction, and hit Su in the face, which caused the entire table to erupt into “ohhh”s and laughter. Just a typical morning in my house.
“Guys! Calm down! I’m trying to make pancakes! Do you want me to freaking burn the food you’re going to eat later?!” I was really irritated at this point. I will say it again: It’s 6 in the morning on a Saturday, Frigate is drinking again after a terrible hangover, Yeonhong is shipping Captain America and the Winter Soldier of all people, and Lushen and Su just got hit in the face with the same basketball. Wouldn’t you be irritated at this point?
“Calm down, Sara, it’s just flour, milk and blueberries! You’re getting berry mad over some pancakes!” I groaned at Lushen’s horrible pun.
A few minutes later, the table had quieted down, nearly everyone was sitting down, and the pancakes were out on the table, and I was left with no pancakes because I was out of milk. After debating if I wanted to eat the most likely stale bagels tucked in a far away corner in the fridge that probably leads to a portal that sucks everything that’s breakfast-related into Narnia or something, I eventually said “screw it” and decided to have some leftover chicken alfredo from last night. After all, there’s no bad time to have chicken alfredo as a meal.

“Now then, we’ve got a whole two days of free time before Platy has to go back to work at the buffet, and before we have to go back to having a boring life!” Orion pushed away his plate. I looked up from my now empty plate that once held chicken alfredo, and saw that he had picked out all the blueberries from his pancakes.
“Orion, I may be your Summoner, but I’m no one’s mom, so I can’t believe I’m saying this, but you are not leaving this table until you finish your plate.” Orion suddenly flounced down on his ball, arms crossed and lower lip stuck out.
“I’ll eat the blueberries when we figure out what to do today.” I sighed and just gave in and told my plans.
“I was hoping we can do shopping today, honestly.” A collective groan came out of everyone sitting at the table (including Frigate, because someone took his beer away and the headache was killing him.)
“Sorry, guys. Summoner always wins if she dislikes other options.” I stood up, clearing everyone but Orion’s dishes.
“But we don’t wanna!” Orion shouted.
“And I reserved a spot as a guest for the next episode of Drunk Gaming with Frigate.” Yeonhong, who had been drawing for the past ten minutes, chimed in.
“And I’m honestly too hungover to even move from this chair.” Frigate managed to slur out. If there was one thing I was glad about, it was that his hangover meant he couldn’t do any videos for his YouTube channel anytime soon. Basically, when Frigate gets his hands on a camera, controller, games and a bunch of beer cans, it’s impressive when he doesn’t destroy at least a hundred dollars worth of stuff that day.
“Look, I know you don’t want to, but we have to, Orion. If it makes you feel any better, you can all buy a maximum of ten things, as long as it’s under a hundred dollars, and no alcohol. I have my back turned to you, but I’m looking at you, Frigate.” All of a sudden, everyone seemed more willing to go. I smiled slightly. I knew what had to be said to get everyone’s attention.
“Alright, just let me finish cleaning the dishes and we’ll go.”]]>

Chapter Three
Monsters’ Rage

The team had only walked across the well-travelled dirt path for about five minutes before they were stopped. Out of the ground two Mushrooms popped out of the ground, almost as tall as Yeonhong. The Mushroom that Elucia had been fed wasn’t nearly as tall as these things.
“It’s the monsters!” Ellia shouted. “Watch out!” Quick as lightning Sieq growled and lunged at the Mushrooms. They were both wind elements, and terribly weak. Their large caps looked comedic, and Elucia almost giggled at how silly they looked, but that giggling was quickly cut off when one of them opened its mouth and choked out a strange mist at Roid. Surprisingly, it knocked him back.
“Roid!” Elucia shrieked. The boy looked at her for a moment, and struggled to get back on his feet, but kept a smile on his face.
“Don’t worry, my little kari.” He smirked. “Us knights can take on –” He was cut off as a cough worked its way out of his throat. Orange blood splattered the ground in front of him. “ – anything.”
“Roid, you’re obviously hurt!” She extended her arm towards him to help him up, and in that moment, her hand glowed blue as a chill rushed through Roid. When her hand stopped glowing, he was able to get back on his feet and grab his sword, the poison having been nullified.
“Thank you for that, Elucia.” With that, he leaped up into the air at the remaining mushroom, stabbing it at the top of its cap and then slicing it right off of its head. The orange-yellow cap flew off like a Frisbee and dissolved into light midair, the stump succumbing to the same fate. The path had been cleared, and the others were free to move.
“That was AWESOME, Elucia!” Sara congratulated, eyes glittering. “How did you do that? You just took the poison right out of Roid’s system!” The fairy blushed from the attention; she was not used to this much praise.
“I-I don’t know, really…I was just in the zone, and then…” Chasun piped up.
“Oh, Elucia’s a healer, like me. Some monsters can hone their attack magic better, while others are more for support, and then there are healers.” She explained, watching as Sieq returned to the duo’s side. “Sieq and Roid are attackers, while you’re more of a healer. Once you’re awakened, you’ll be more of a support monster, though.”
“Awakened?” Elucia echoed. Sara was about to explain, but Yeonhong cut her off.
“It’s something we’ll tell you later.” She huffed, sitting down again.
“Yeonhong’s right; we need to keep moving if we want to find the source of this dark energy.” Ellia said. Chasun helped the light monster up to her feet and they continued walking, not noticing the two monsters looking at them from a distance.
“N-new ones…” The little girl whispered to her brother. He wrapped a wing around her, as if to protect her.
“Yes, Charlotte. The monsters here are the weakest in the continent of Mystica, so new Summoners will frequently train their monsters here.” He explained, before looking behind him all of a sudden. A Maned Boar – wind – was about to charge at them. Charlotte looked too and froze up from fear, her heart pounding in her ears.
“Get down, Charlotte!” He shouted, pulling her behind him and unsheathing his sword. Sara looked up.
“Did you all just hear that?” She asked, turning to the group. Elucia tilted her head in curiosity.
“It sounded like someone was telling somebody named Charlotte to get down.” The group shook their heads, which caused the girl to shrug.
“Ah well. Continue on, my team!” She pointed ahead of her and picked up the pace a little.
Chasun kept having a strange thought push its way to the front of her mind, despite how many times she tried to shove it back. This world has become corrupted. It said. Let’s give humanity the punishment it deserves. The thought grew louder. Kill all humans. They caused the war.
She was snapped out of it by the sound of a pig snorting. “That monster in the center…” Ellia mused. “I think he’s the boss!” There was a Maned Boar, a fire element, blocking the path. There were two other wind element Mushrooms by his side. Sara didn’t falter, but instead took control.
“Sieq!” She shouted. “Use your elemental advantage to take out one of the Mushrooms by the boar’s side! Elucia; Sieq is going to get poisoned by the Mushroom he chooses, so use your healing magic to get rid of it! Roid, you go for the other Mushroom!” Ellia was impressed by how quickly she had the battle figured out in her mind and therefore knew what to do. It made her seem like she had the strategic planning of a world chess expert, which was strange because she didn’t even play checkers.
Sieq did as he was told, growling and snapping at his enemy. One mushroom fell, and just as Sara planned, he, too, had been poisoned. Elucia went to work, and within a second, Sieq was ready to attack again. Roid’s attack, however, was cut off. The boar charged at him and, despite him digging his heels into the dirt, he fell back. The mushroom to the left let out another poisonous mist, which wrapped around Roid and poisoned him again.
He laid on his side, trying to get up, but the venom made his arm slide out from under him as his eyes closed. He had been completely knocked out, and for a second Elucia was filled with rage. It was not directed towards Roid, but rather, the Maned Boar. The swirling ice mist returned; freezing spikes stabbing into the boar’s hide. Painful anger froze the boar in its place, and Sieq tore up the mushroom by its side.
“Alright, Roid’s down, but the boar’s frozen! It won’t be able to attack for a while!” Sara shouted. “Elucia! Finish him off!” The boar thrashed around, but as its hooves broke free from its icy prison, it was finished off by another ice mist.
“I knew you could handle it!” Ellia smiled at the team. Sara held a second rune in her hand, which Ellia quickly noticed. It was a slot two rune, and its main substat was speed.
“Is that the second Energy rune? You’ll be able to complete a set at this rate!” The subject swung from runes to Garen Forest.
“Durand and Chasun were right; there is something wrong with the forest. We should go and take a closer look…” The crackling rage died down, and what was left was fear. She flew towards Roid and started gently shaking him, trying to get him to wake up.
“Damn it, Roid, wake up…” She cursed under her breath, determined not to let her love or her Summoner hear her defile the air around her like that. His eyelids fluttered and eventually opened and Elucia breathed a sigh of relief.
“You’re alright…” Chasun shivered suddenly as the fairy helped Roid up.
“Ugh, I’m getting the creeps here all of a sudden.” She mumbled under her breath. The strange thought was growing louder in her head. The Homunculi were sealed away because of the humans. It growled, wolf-like and hostile. Kill the humans in front of you, Sky Dancer girl.
There was a flash of white as something rushed by, causing the others to flinch. Roid went into a protective stance over Elucia, and she would have blushed had she not been concerned about what that was all about. The sun began to set after a few more hours of walking on what seemed like the endless path, and the team looked up.
“Look, it’s turning dark.” Sara sighed. “We’ll have to go back to the island and rest for the night.” Chasun was glad that she could take her mind off of the shivers, and agreed with Sara. As the group headed back, Chasun turned to Sara.
“Oh yeah, Sara.” She said, catching the girl’s attention.
“What is it?”
“When we get back to the island, there’s a little something that I want to show you.” Of course, this made her want to know more, but no matter how much she pleaded Chasun to tell, she wouldn’t, only keeping a small smile on her face.
“It’s a secret,” She would giggle, “and secrets have to be kept, otherwise they’re not secrets, are they? Oh, and don’t try and ask Yeon; I told her that if she blabbed I’d get Verdehile.” Verdehile was the sisters’ best friends, and was pretty much the only monster that Yeonhong ever listened to. Chasun suspected that she was crushing on the Vampire boy – she couldn’t blame her, though, he was very handsome and a pleasant sight to look at.
The monsters went first, stepping through the portal back home. It had already become night time on their island. Ellia turned back towards them all, seeing as how they were generally bright-eyed and ready for tomorrow.
“I’ll be in the Arena Defense Tower making dinner for you all if you need me!” She smiled, turning towards the tower. Sara turned towards Chasun, who had a scroll in her hand. It was different from the kind of scrolls that she had summoned, earlier – it was the color of Chasun’s dress, and a black square seal kept it shut instead of a blue one.
“Follow me to the Summoning Circle.” She smiled, before she herself rushed there, her skirt flying up behind her. The six year old was breathless by the time she made it, but Chasun wasn’t, and was instead patiently sitting on the grass, waiting for her.
“Alright, so you’ve done a few basic summons, right?” She asked, not waiting for an answer.
“Well, Ellia was holding back on the goods. Check this out, baby!” She held the scroll in front of Sara, and the girl took it, studying the paper.
“A Mystical Scroll – works just like crystal summons, but you’ve got a scroll instead of using crystals that could be used for precious energy.” Chasun explained. “The only things better than this are the Legendary and Transcendence Scrolls!”
Both scrolls were, of course, legends. The Legendary Scroll could only be acquired by the best of the best people; those who climbed the Trial of Ascension and destroyed the demons who lived at the top, Lyrith and Ath’tharos. The scroll would give anyone at least a natural four star. The Transcendence Scroll was even rarer, to the point where there was no recorded summoning that used one – for good reason, too. It was said that the Transcendence Scroll only pulled natural five star monsters, the rarest and best monsters. Chasun had once hinted that Sara would be getting a Legendary Scroll on a monthly basis once she became a Summoner, but for now, she focused on the Mystical Scroll.
“Unfortunately, you need quite a bit of mana to perform the summoning, but luckily for us, I have about 20,000 spare mana.” She pulled out a few stones and set them on the Summoning Circle.
“You ready to get yourself a good monster?” Sara nodded excitedly. Elucia and Roid floated over to ask what was happening. Sara gave them a rushed explanation before setting the scroll down onto the middle of the Summoning Circle. The paper dissolved, turning into liquid and morphing into a monster, and suddenly, green lightning started to skitter and jump out of the Circle, unlike her first three summons. The four jumped, but Chasun was growing excited.
“When you see lightning, that means you have a natural four star or higher!” She shouted. Chasun wasn’t sure why she was shouting, but she didn’t care. There was a blinding light, and everyone had to shield their eyes. When the light cleared away, a woman stood, proud and tall, in front of them where the Mystical Scroll used to be. Her blue suit was sleeveless and stopped just at her thighs, her black boots going up to her knees. Her hair, as dark as night, was tied high up into a thin ponytail, free to swing as freely as it chose, framing a beautiful face and blood red eyes. One hand was placed delicately on her hip, the other gripping tightly onto a whip that swirled with the power of water.
“Summon successful!” Chasun whooped, pumping her fist into the air. “Looks like you got yourself a four-star water Rakshasa, Su!”]]>

Summary: “Do not venture into the woods after night.” It was sensible advice; after all, every monster that ignored this never came back. Lora was adventurous and her sense of rebellion was tingling, though, so she braved the elements, throwing caution to the wind, never knowing that it was to be a terrible mistake.

“Welcome to the island, child.” A strange creature greeted the girl. She was a being of pure white, with the exception of her golden robe and staff, the gem a vibrant magenta, and two sapphire-like eyes. She was floating an inch or two off the ground, her long hair tied up in multiple spots on the same ponytail. She had no mouth, yet could still speak. The monster who one would think would be the quietest had the most words to say. The world around the girl was jarringly bright, and after looking down, she realized she was some sort of stone platform with strange symbols drawn onto them.
“My name’s Icasha; you are Lora, right?” Swallowing the saliva in her mouth, Lora nodded. One hand gripped onto the arm of a worn out teddy bear, and the other rested on her umbrella. Icasha’s free arm extended toward Lora, as if to help her off the Summoning Circle.
“Follow me, and I will give you a tour of our island.” She did so and hopped off, stumbling and falling onto her stomach. Icasha’s blank expression stayed the same, but for a second it looked like she had flinched.
“Are you alright?” Before Lora could respond, she felt metal on her arm – both arms, actually. She was helped up by an invisible force, and when she looked down, she realized she saw two small knights, who went up to her knee. Icasha was impressed.
“It is not every day we see a monster tap into their magic in the first week, much less their first ten minutes.” She noted. “You must be very strong.” Lora blushed at the attention. She changed the subject, though, and turned, motioning for Lora to follow her. The girl followed, and was given a thorough tour as Icasha described the use of everything, from the portal to the mana pond, but for some reason, she only seemed to mention the mysterious forest on one island. It was strange, so naturally, it caught Lora’s attention.
When she asked, Icasha stopped everything all of a sudden; moving, talking, and for a moment, even breathing. “D-did I say something wrong…?” She whispered. Icasha sprung back to life and shook her head.
“…The only thing about that I have to tell is do not venture into the woods after night.” Icasha took a breath and turned to the new girl, her tour of the island finished. “Any questions?”
Lora piped up. “Why can’t I go into the woods at night?” Icasha glanced at the trees, leading into a world that no one dared to go.
“We have had too many get curious and disobey, and to this day I have not seen a single one of them.” Her voice rang out, clear as day, in Lora’s head. The light Undine was one of the oldest monsters on the Summoner’s island, and even though she had no mouth, she could still talk through telepathy. Lora squeaked and shivered.
“I-I’m sorry to hear…”
“Do not be; it is not your fault.” Icasha shrugged. The girl’s bright blue eyes were filled with intrigued worry. The teddy bear in her hand looked like it was watching Icasha. She wouldn’t doubt it; ever since she had been summoned just ten minutes ago she had shown her power was significantly stronger than an Occult Girl her level.
“Come along, now. Our Summoner has been waiting for you. She has got all the essences to awaken you.” With her free hand, Icasha led Lora to the Arena Defense, where their Summoner resided.
As she was led further away from the forest, her thoughts about it became even more curious. The rebellious side inside of her she didn’t even know she had started to spark, and at that moment she decided that she would disobey Icasha’s instructions and sneak out in the middle of the night.

The glow around Lora barely illuminated the world around her. Occasionally, a little heart from the aura she had been given bubbled up into her line of sight and vanished. Her teddy bear was resting on her shoulder and acted like a guardian angel – not that she needed him to be one, considering she already had a light element guardian angel of her own.
The trees loomed over her, the branches devoid of leaves. It was a chilly autumn night, and without the leaves, they looked like black claws, waiting to snatch her up and carry her away to somewhere beyond her wildest imagination. Her umbrella was open and held in her left hand, with her right, she extended up, where a little ball of light flickered and danced like a flame.
That was what was so mesmerizing about light elements; they showed traits of nearly every other element. The glow that surrounded Lora came from dark elements, their dark aura keeping them from being burned in the light. Every monster could condense a bit of their magic into a little ball, but light magic acted the most like a fire element’s magic when condensed.
Lora took a deep breath and braced herself for whatever may lie ahead in the forest. The sensible side of her told her to go back and listen to Icasha; if even the best monsters never came back after wandering into the forest, how would she be able to survive? The other part of her said to walk into the woods, where was her sense of adventure?
I’ll just walk in, look around for about ten minutes and then leave. Surely that can’t be enough time for whatever was in there to find me. She told herself, reassuring herself that she would be fine. Her shoes delicately stepped onto the ground, covered by the corpses of leaves that had passed on and fallen from their home. As she walked through the entrance, she noted that the island should have ended there, but instead of the eternal sky below them all, like anywhere else, she saw ground, like a human forest.
The forest was all sorts of strange and beautiful. The trees no longer looked like claws, but delicate sculptures, twisted and carved into intricate shapes. The forest was pitch black, with the exception of the sounds of her shoes, sharp and polished, crunching under the leaves.
Something snapped under one foot, and she sucked in a breath. It did not sound like the leaves crumbling; this was sharp and sudden. She looked down. Pitch black. She closed her eyes and breathed, calling for the energy around her to come to her and light up her vision. Her vision became clearer, and as she lifted her foot, she saw two halves of a branch. There were tens of splinters that had become so after she stepped on it. Lora breathed in a sigh of relief. It was nothing.
For a moment, she wondered why she was told not to venture out at night. She had heard of Forest Keepers, strange sprites that had been disguised to look like stumps of dead trees and then attack passersby, but she had seen none of that. Eventually, though, she decided it would be best to return home to the island before dawn came and people started looking for her.
Don’t go, love.
Her heart stopped. The only monster she had known to speak in her head was Icasha, and this voice sounded nothing like her. It sounded male; sly and almost what could be considered seductive. Lora made up her mind, right then and there, to leave the forest. She turned and started to walk at a brisk pace, keeping her light in front of her the whole way.
Lora’s heart was pounding against her chest, hoping that she could get out of there. Something broke behind her and she whipped around, pigtails bouncing. In the distance, she realized she saw something; two small red dots, glowing. No, they weren’t dots. They were eyes. They were trained on her, watching her every move. That was it. She was done. It was time to run.
Why do you run, beautiful?
He sounded like he was coming closer to her, his footsteps intermingling with hers. He seemed to take joy in watching her feel fear, watching her jerk her head in every direction to try and find him. Lora should have just listened to Icasha when she said never to venture into the woods at night. Her sense of adventure and rebelliousness had overwhelmed her common sense, though, and she was going to have to suffer for it.
She ran, looking for the way she came in, but if anything, it only chased her even further into the forest. Lora didn’t know east from west, and just like that, she was trapped. Her breath sounded so loud to her ears, and felt like it only brought her predator closer to her. Her limbs felt weak and numb, and she couldn’t go any further.
“After all, you know there’s no way out.” The voice was behind her, whispering in her ear. A hand covered her mouth from behind all of a sudden; fingers slender and chilly, using its force to press down on her skin and muffle the scream that tried to rip out of her throat.
“Don’t scream or call for your guardian angel,” He threatened; his warm breath on her neck. “or I’ll really hurt you.” Lora had been caught.
“It has been years since I had fresh blood…” Lora struggled to break out of his grasp, but another hand clamped onto her wrist with surprising force. The light in her hand was extinguished and her umbrella clattered to the ground. Her head whipped around, trying to find a glimpse of the monster. She saw blonde, almost white fringes of hair and a grin, showing off small fangs. He had fancy attire; a cape and sharp red and black shirt. He was a handsome Vampire; the mysterious fire element, Verdehile.
“Feisty little thing, aren’t you?” He whispered, holding her down. He could smell the scent of her blood as her heart pumped with adrenaline. “Almost as feisty as you are beautiful. I oughta keep you for myself…” His grip on her wrist tightened and something audibly cracked, pain streaming up her arm and through every nerve. It was obvious he had at least fractured a bone. Tears gathered in the corner of Lora’s eyes, knowing her death was near.
“Please…I’m sorry, just let me go…” Verdehile actually laughed a little.
“Let you go? Don’t be silly~.” Her fingers twitched, trying to summon one of her toy knights or bring her teddy to life. Verdehile noticed, though, and clamped down even harder and she screamed in agony, begging for someone, anyone, to save her, but no one came. Lora broke down, gently sobbing and trying to whisper “why me” It didn’t matter, though, as he didn’t care about her suffering. Verdehile’s tongue flicked out as he licked his lower lip. His favorite kind of blood was the kind the light elements had.
“P-please…I don’t want to die…” She had shut down, her energy gone and her fate sealed.
As he bit down, Lora struggled until she went limp, throat raw from screaming for help.

“Anyone know where Lora went?” Chow asked. He was looking especially heroic that day, his axe in hand and leaning on one shoulder. The Dragon Knight’s armor had been polished to perfection. Icasha was worried about the girl. When she looked into her mind, she had seen a rebel. For once, she was the one given a mind shock as she realized what could have happened.
“I warned her about the forest…I do not think she listened.” Icasha stared, helplessly, at where the light natural five star had entered and never returned. Ever since Aschubel had wandered in, she had warned as many monsters as she could to avoid that place. Most of them listened.
Others, though, were the ones who kept Verdehile alive.]]>

Chapter Two
Garen Forest, Runes and Power-Ups

The six stepped through the portal after Ellia showed them a map of the continent. There were multiple areas, all vastly different in terms of climate, but the one she was pointing to was a forest, lush green surrounding the area. “Garen Forest,” the writing below the area read.
“Come on, Elucia, Sieq!” Sara smiled as she beckoned the Fairy and the Hellhound over. As she stepped through what felt like liquid, she was no longer in her island, but the forest. The trees grew tall, the quiet chattering of birds ringing out in the area. To the left was a waterfall, the water lazily flowing down the rocks and into the river.
There was a path in front of them, growing worn after years of footsteps walking in the exact same place. As Sara started to walk, two pigs with fierce-looking horns ran in front of her, blocking the way. She gasped and Elucia flew in front of her, Sieq close behind. The pigs looked exactly the same, with the exception of their hide. One pig had a hide a similar color to Sieq’s fur, and the other was a dark brown.
“It’s just practice, so there’s no pressure. Let’s begin!” Ellia called out behind her. Sieq went first. He snarled and lunged at the boar with a dark brown hide, snapping at it twice with its powerful jaw. The boar dropped to its side, and dissolved into light. Elucia went next, a swirling spiral of water surrounding the other boar, attacking it thrice. It was frozen in place. Sieq proceeded to snap at it once, and just like the previous Maned Boar, it dropped to its side and dissolved to light. Yeonhong rolled her eyes. It was nothing she hadn’t seen before; in fact, she had done this test herself when she was first summoned.
“Incredible!” Ellia congratulated. “That was way too easy for a Summoner like you! You didn’t even need the practice!” In front of them laid another Unknown Scroll, dropped by a Maned Boar. Chasun shuddered as she thought of just where exactly a Maned Boar would get such a scroll.
“Look at that! We got a new Unknown Scroll! It looks like today’s our lucky day, eh, Sara?” Ellia directed towards the new Summoner. Sara’s hair flowed down her back, bouncing as she nodded.
“I wonder what monster we’ll summon with this one!” Elucia said as her Summoner picked up the scroll and examined the seal.
“Let’s go back and see!” Chasun chimed in. She wasn’t just playing along to get Sara hyped; she was actually enjoying going on small adventures with her and watching her learn at a rapid speed. As the seven left, two monsters rushed through the forest. One was cloaked in a white and golden hood, a magnificent sword in hand and a pair of wings on his back.
In his free arm he held a tiny girl, much shorter than other girls her age. She was barely older than seven, her green eyes wide and her hair, a similar color, tied up into little curly pigtails. Their names were Eladriel and Charlotte, and though they did not need to hide just yet, they knew that in a few years they would be forever hiding their past.
The monster brought from the latest scroll was a cute boy. His hair was a dirty blonde, tied up into a ponytail at the nape of his neck, where it was held into a small stream behind his back, his red eyes fierce with determination. He held a large, bulky sword with both hands and was covered in golden armor. Like Sieq, he was a two star monster.
“Greetings, Summoner.” He said. His voice was certainly something pleasant to listen to; husky and calm. “My name is Roid, and it is a pleasure to meet you.”
“Ah, would you look at that! It’s a wind Vagabond! That makes three monsters, each with a different element!” Elucia looked up at Roid as he shook the hand of Sara, and her eyes widened. What was this fluttering in her heart? She didn’t recognize this feeling. He looked familiar somehow, like they were lovers in the past, but she would have remembered a face as pretty as his.
“Now you can fully utilize the cyclical attribute relationships in battle. You remember them, right?” Ellia asked Sara, her words sounding foggy and far away to Elucia, as if she were trying to listen with her head submerged in water.
“Right! Water destroys fire, but a breath of wind will destroy water! The fire element’s power knocks wind out of the arena!” Sara chanted. It was one of the first things her parents taught her when she was little.
“And what about light and dark monsters?” Chasun asked, testing her.
“They will destroy each other, counteracting since the beginning of time!”
“Guess that means you better not get in contact with a Wolyung, ‘ey, Yeon?” Yeonhong was disgusted with Chasun. She said so. Roid turned to look at the two Sky Dancers.
“Well, well, who are these lovely ladies?” Chasun blushed at this. Yeonhong felt as if Roid was putting on a façade, like in reality all he wanted to do was to get away from them.
“You are false and empty.” Roid chuckled at this, like Yeonhong had said something funny.
“Oh yeah, I almost forgot, Sara!” Ellia turned back to her. “Durand left you a little island-warming gift!” She pulled out a stone, shaped like a triangle. A white “E” was emblazed on it.
“This is a Magic Rune you can engrave onto your monster. It contains the power to make monsters stronger!” She handed it to Sara, who took it. She went to see where she could place it on one of her monsters. On the back of Elucia’s neck were six slots, one of which looked exactly where her rune could fit. She placed it in the slot and pressed down. It clicked into place, engraved into the rune slot.
“The rune magic was successful!” She said. “Can you see the difference?” Sara went to see the difference, and a box suddenly showed up in front of her. She stumbled and nearly fell onto the ground, but as she composed herself, she had a look at the box. There were a bunch of numbers, each of which representing a part of Elucia’s stats, including her HP, attack power, defense and speed. Next to her attack power, though, there was a green “+3”
“The green number near Elucia’s attack power is the additional magic that the rune gave to her!” Ellia explained.
“Why don’t you try powering up the rune now?” Chasun piped up. Ellia showed her how to navigate the box so that the certain rune she was looking at showed up on the “screen” Mana in hand; she held the stone against the rune, watching as it dissolved into light, absorbing itself into the rune. Upon checking Elucia’s stats again, Sara saw that the +3 had gone up to +5.
“Great job!” Ellia congratulated. She then pressed a few more buttons, and a digital shop of sorts popped up.
“Let’s construct a Power-Up Circle now, to train your monsters and make them stronger! Don’t worry, I’ve already prepped the material!” It took her a few tries, but eventually she had a Power-Up Circle next to the Summonhenge.
“Elucia!” She called, snapping the fairy out of her daydream. Why did Roid bring those feelings to her? She wanted to study him, like a scientist and a new species of animal they did not recognize; to figure out what was it about him. The girl floated away from the other three, Roid’s voice fading away. He was quite a charismatic man; having already made friends with Chasun. Yeonhong, of course, refused to open up to Roid under any circumstances, but that was normal.
“Here, Elucia; stand over there on the Power-Up circle!” As Elucia did so, Ellia grabbed something by the nape of its neck and dragged it over. Sara studied it for a moment. It seemed like a little stub with a large blue hat on, two small blue eyes on the side of said stub. It was a Mushroom. Upon further examination, she saw it had one silver star. It peered into her eyes, and she looked back, where she saw no emotion, despite the Mushroom about to be used as food.
“You’ll need some mana, too, in order for the food to be absorbed into her being and increase her strength.” Ellia shoved the Mushroom into Elucia’s arms, while Sara placed a few mana stones into a small bowl near the side. She had figured that was what it was for, anyway.
The mana stones dissolved into water and flowed into the indentations in the Power-Up Circle, all of which connecting directly to Elucia. The Mushroom became light and flowed into her veins. A physical chill rushed through her body, and suddenly, an image flashed through her mind, of Sara’s curious face. She was in the background of this image, and said image was tilted up, like whoever took such a photo was too short and had to look up. A memory, she realized.
“That was great!” Ellia smiled. Something in her pocket started to buzz, diverting her attention from Sara. Upon further researching, it turned out to be a message from Durand. Like the last time, a full-body hologram of him showed up, and the message began.
“I was curious about how the Arena preparation was going.” He started. “I assume things are going well?”
“Yep!” Chasun nodded. “Ellia just taught Sara about runes and powering up monsters. Although, we haven’t talked about signing her up just yet…”
“Actually, I believe she’s more than ready for it.” Durand smiled, crossing his arms. “She already possesses the skills to enter the Arena and fight against others. Don’t be alarmed, but I’ve already registered her!” Ellia looked up all of a sudden.
“Durand! She’s just a child! She just summoned her first three monsters!” He shrugged at this.
“Sooner or later, it was going to happen. Doesn’t matter who does it! You all can thank me later!” Roid was listening quietly, Elucia floating next to him.
“Our Summoner shows all the potential of being what they call a ‘Legend Rank,’ even if she is young.” He said to no one in particular.
“You could be a legend, too, Roid…” Elucia dreamily replied.
“There’s going to be a portal to the Arena opening up soon on your island, so keep your eye out for that.” Sara looked up into the sky. Far away, was the fabled Sky Arena, one of humanity’s greatest creations since the dawn of time. It was rumored that the best of the best, every week, had a new monster on their island after they had become a Legend Rank.
“Also,” He said, which made everyone bring their attention back to him; “I have a small favor to ask of you. I’m sure you’re all familiar with Garen Forest nearby.”
“We are.” Chasun replied. “Sara did a test battle there earlier.”
“There seems to be a sudden outbreak of malicious monsters there. Can you find out what’s going on?” Durand scanned Sara and her monsters, looking for a response. When there was none, he decided to go on.
“The Council of Magicians are trying to investigate, and it’s taking time. We’re…a bit busy here.” He did not want to worry them, but they were seeing a surge of powerful light and dark energy in Faimon Volcano all of a sudden – such energy could only be created by who the humans called the “light and dark Homunculus girls”
“That’s impossible, though!” He had said when he first heard of the news. “They were sealed away in an unbreakable seal, and it’s held strong since the creation of the Sky Arena!” He kept it to himself, though. Everyone seemed satisfied with this, except for Yeonhong. He had always thought she was different for some reason; questioning everything around her and acting irritated when she wasn’t given the answer she wanted. The girl stood up for the first time that morning, a sign that she was growing irked.
“What are you doing in there that you can’t go to the forest yourselves?” Durand hadn’t expected to be asked that, and to be honest he didn’t have an answer prepared in case it was asked.
“That’s a very good question, Yeonhong.” He turned to Sara instead, leaving the youngest of the bunch simmering in silence.
“Don’t be afraid, Sara. They’re just forest monsters, so it’ll be good practice for your monsters!” Sara didn’t seem to notice the sudden change of subject, or just didn’t care.
“Great! You can count on me, Durand!” She grinned. “Failure is not an option and lose is not a word in my dictionary!”
“I’ll be waiting for the good news, then!” With that, the hologram disappeared and instantly the quiet island was filled with chatters of excitement.
“Wow, Durand is not very patient, is he?” Ellia shook her head. “He’s already registered you for the Arena…” She, like Durand, soon changed the subject after that.
“So what’s up with those monsters in the Garen Forest, Chasun?” The Sky Dancer was “connected” in a way. She and all other monsters could feel things that humans could not.
“The monsters there seem to feel…tainted, for some reason.” She said, closing her eyes and absentmindedly opening and closing her fan.
“They all want to kill anything that moves and I don’t know why. They’re all filled with hate beyond anything humans can conjure.” Chasun reopened her eyes and went to get her sister, who had sat back down again. Roid was talking to her and she wouldn’t say a word to him. If anything, Yeonhong was filled with hatred for anything that moved, although she could only express in her childish ways.
“It used to be such a peaceful forest…what could have happened?” The blonde sighed. Her eyes were the color of the sky above them, and were clouded with worry. Sara, on the other hand, was not at all worried; if anything, she was excited.
“There’s only one way to find out, Ellia!” She grinned, hopping on over to the Energy Gateway.

Chapter One
Summoner’s Beginnings

Summoners War

“Have you ever heard the story about the Mana Crystal?” Chasun asked, walking alongside her sister and the little girl. The question was directed towards the girl, the daughter of her Summoner. It should be my Summoner, her mother, who should be telling her this story and leading her towards her new island, Chasun said to herself, not me.
“…No!” The bright-eyed little girl looked up at Chasun; her brunette eyes the exact same color as her hair.
“Will you please tell me?” Chasun’s sister, Yeonhong, scoffed slightly. Although she was four, she was always so cynical about everything. Chasun ignored her, though, and continued talking to Sara.
“Are you sure?” She grinned. “It’s reaaaaaally scary!” They reached her new island, and Sara was so deep into Chasun’s story that she didn’t notice Ellia approaching the three.
“…and because he had been a very bad monster for splitting the crystal, that’s why they had to lock Homunculus up!” Chasun finished. The girl’s fan was closed, her orange and red dress trailing off into waves upon waves of silky fabric behind her. She looked up and saw the golden-haired woman coming towards them and stood up.
“Oh look! Your teacher is Ellia!” Sara’s father had gone to school with Ellia during most of his high school days, and had become almost best friends with her. They were so alike; their dreams were to be teachers to new Summoners, and many other things Chasun couldn’t remember. The two would have ended up dating if he hadn’t met Chasun’s Summoner; Sara’s mother. Like Ellia, she had dreams of becoming a teacher to new Summoners.
“You made it!” She shouted, once she was in earshot. “I’ve been waiting for you.” She didn’t need to do her usual “I’m Ellia, and I’ll be assisting you from here on out,” introduction, because she and Durand both knew Sara and her family very well.
“Hi, Ellie!” Sara enthusiastically waved at her. Ellia’s hair had been pulled up into a high ponytail that day, her blue and white uniform crisp and sharp. Although she and Sara’s father never dated, Ellia still stayed a family friend. The blonde smiled when she saw the girl and waved back, quickening her pace into a jog.
“Hi, Sara! How’s my favorite Chimera tamer doing?” It was an inside joke among them; Sara had once been able to hug, play with and even kiss a Taor on the nose within two minutes of meeting him, when, according to the Taor’s Summoner, he was insanely aggressive towards everyone. In his words, “It even took him a year to warm up to me.”
“I’m doing great, Ellie! Guess what! I’m becoming a Summoner!” Of course, Ellia had been informed of it over a month ago; before both her parents had to go overseas to be teachers to Summoners they were assigned to. The couple had to do quite a lot of things that not even Ellia knew, but it was worth it in the end. She pretended to be surprised, though.
“What?! No way!” She gasped, one hand flying to her face.
“It’s an honor to become your tutor, and I’ll do my best until the day that you rule the Arena!” Ellia pointed up at the sky, where the Sky Arena floated, watching over everyone. Sara giggled. Yeonhong glared at the both of them from underneath her gigantic white hat, as if she knew that Ellia was faking.
“If she weren’t becoming a Summoner, you wouldn’t be on her island.” Chasun quickly spoke up before Yeonhong ruined all the fun.
“Sorry that we have to be here instead of her parents; they just got their first Summoners to tutor.” Ellia shrugged.
“Ah, it’s alright. We’ve all been abuzz with excitement, as you came very highly recommended by your father, and then later Durand!” Sara looked up at the woman.
“R-really?! What did Dad and Durand say about me?” Ellia’s blue eyes sparkled as she told Sara.
“They both said that you had smarts beyond your age, and that you were a very quick learner! Oh, speaking of him…” Ellia pulled out a small rectangle, about the width of an iPod and a pale blue color.
“I’ve got a message from Durand!” She tapped on the screen a few times, and a hologram fizzed and buzzed to life in front of them, showing a life-sized image of Durand.

“My friend, you finally decided to join the Arena and become a Summoner!” The redheaded man laughed. His green eyes were always narrow, but he was the first to smile and the first to crack jokes when appropriate.
“I’m glad to hear you’ll be joining our forces. The times have been tough.” Chasun looked up upon hearing his last sentence.
“What’s happened that’s so bad?” Durand continued on after Chasun’s question. Yeonhong was sitting on the ground, not caring if she got her pretty white dress dirty, looking up at Durand’s message.
“You see, the Council of Magicians has many obstacles to overcome. The Arena must be protected at all costs to resolve conflicts and to keep the strong from overpowering the weak.” Chasun broke it down for Sara – or, started to but was cut off when Sara told her she knew what Durand was talking about.
“Although, I wouldn’t object if you were to rise to the top to take it all!” He laughed again – it was a warm, friendly laugh that instantly made people feel comfortable around him.
“That’s the way the world turns, and that means it’s time for you to take control of the reins. I’ll be looking forward to watching your progress!” The message ended, and Ellia smiled at her.
“Sounds like Durand’s putting all of his faith in you! I’ve been running around, preparing here and there, but fixing this place up will be no easy task. Come, come; I’ll show you all around the island!” She motioned for the three to follow her. They did so, and Ellia began her thorough tour of the place, starting with the Mana Pond and the Summoning Circle.
“Every time you summon a new monster, a house themed specifically for them will appear!” Ellia explained. “Of course, there are a few exceptions, such as silver-star monsters and the fact that under certain circumstances, two monsters can share a house!”
“Ooh! So that means lovers can eventually move in together?” Sara asked. Ellia chuckled slightly, her enthusiasm contagious.
“Yeah! Although, you’d have to discuss it with the Council of Summoners and get their permission before you can do so. Luckily, though, you have me, charming Ellia; who can woo Durand into doing anything for her!”
“Where can Sara sleep if she wants to stay in her island for the night, Ellia?” Chasun asked, genuinely curious. Her Summoner had never told anything about this to her. Ellia motioned towards the tower in the middle of the island, carved out of stone and curling all the way up to the blue skies. At the very bottom, there was a pair of doors, made out of red material and adorned with silver.
“She can live in the Arena Defense Tower!” Ellia remarked. Both Chasun and Sara looked at it in awe. Yeonhong was indifferent.
“In there, you can live in the island if you want, fight other people in the Sky Arena, and the Arena Defense Tower even has the ability to let you hear what other people are talking about, all around the world! I’ll show you how to change radio channels later. For now, though, I’ll be taking you to the most important place, the Summonhenge!” The official name for the Summoning Circle was the Summonhenge, but no one except tutors and the Council of Summoners ever called it that. Chasun picked up her little sister off of the ground, where she had once again sat down, and carried her to the circle. It was made out of a dark blue stone, with a glowing triangle in the center and four finger-like stones surrounding it.
“Here, Summoners call upon their monsters for battle.” Out of one of her dress folds, Ellia pulled out a rolled-up piece of paper, held together with a teal string and a similar colored seal.
“I have an Unknown Scroll. Why don’t you summon it now?” She handed it to Sara, who hungrily stared at it.
“I wanna see your summoning abilities!” Sara had seen her father and mother do summonings before, so she knew what to do. Her little red shoes bounced across the grass, flower-print dress billowing out as the breeze changed. She easily broke the string and opened up the paper, where an ancient language greeted her. Sara did not try to read this language, though, and set it down on the triangle, placing her sacrifice, three large, blue crystals, each worth about a hundred of the small gems. Chasun watched as she raised her arms, shouting a strange chant:
“Monsters from the deep or from up high,
I call upon you to be my savior, hear my cry!”
The crystals dissolved and the words melted off the page. A glow surrounded the summoning circle, and the scroll disappeared, leaving behind a wild dog, its fur a deep red and teeth pointed and menacing-looking – a fire monster. Chasun clapped a little. It was only a two star monster, but it was her first summon and it wasn’t that bad. The dog hopped off of the Summonhenge, circled everyone for a moment, sniffing them and taking in their scent, before yawning and wandering off to explore the island.
“Ahh, the dreaded fire Hellhound, Sieq; a swift, fierce attacker!” Ellia smiled down at her. “Your summoning abilities really are as impressive as they say, despite your age!” She thought for a moment, before she took out a small bag.
“Let’s try something stronger this time. Let’s use some Mana Crystals to perform a Crystal Summon! Using Mana Crystals will allow you to summon powerful monsters – three stars or better!” Ellia let her have a peek inside the bag. Pinkish red crystals glowed inside, and they seemed to all be vibrating slightly, bursting with magic and energy.
“Have your parents done Crystal Summons before?” Sara nodded, and Ellia handed her the bag.
“In that case, I’m sure this will be a piece of cake for you!” She skipped back to the circle and emptied out the bag on the triangle. The crystals fell onto the rock, clattering against one another. Her arms spread out, and she chanted another summoning call. The circle glowed again and the crystals dissolved into light, shaping and forming into something. By the time the summoning ended, a girl levitated slightly above the circle. Her sky-blue hair was loosely tied up at the nape of her neck, her dress, a similar color, made out of hydrangeas. She was three stars, and was the water-element Fairy.
“Good morning, madams!” She smiled, her eyes naturally wide. “My name is Elucia!”
“Wow, that was flawless!” Ellia exclaimed as Sara introduced herself to Elucia. “It’s clear that there’s nothing more for me to teach you about summoning!”
“Next up is the Gateway.” She pointed towards a portal, to the upper left corner of the island. It floated above a platform, a transparent glow spiraling and swirling inside of its round frame.
“You can teleport to battle areas through the Gateway. The energy that’s required for dimensional movement is generated through here, too.” She explained to the girls.
“I’ve prepared a battle practice field in the Garen Forest nearby.” Elucia floated off the Summoning Circle, examining the Battle Gateway.
“Now that we’ve summoned some monsters…how about we have a warm-up?”
